Zuerich, Switzerland Release of ‘the Better Angels’ Last Night! Danke Schoen!
A big “Danke Schoen” to everyone who came last night to Stall 6 for the show! It was a great night.
My new Zuri band, including Thomas Marmier, Lukas Landis, and Tobias Wirz, performed for 150 people in the very cool Zurich venue.
The Swiss based online publication, Ron Orp, announced the show saying I’m a “Melancholy Cowboy” in the Cash tradition. Well, if the shoe fits…
And popular Swiss blog, Room84, wrote, “Ladies and Gentlemen … Watch out! John Francis, the charismatic musician from Tennessee (USA) is back in Zurich … packed with excellent music with me John returns back to the Swiss stages. His style is a perfect blend of Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen, Jeff Buckley, and incredible talent. Always there with his acoustic guitar, which he has under control like Lucky Luke his revolver. A live act which you should not miss!” (Google translator)
Also in the house last night, were representatives from activist and advocate groups Solinetz and the Zurich Autonome Schul, both working for the rights of immigrants in Zurich, and providing advocacy to those individuals seeking asylum. They were offering information and literature on their efforts.
Well, me and Lucky Luke (my Martin guitar, who’s real name is Dixie), have several more shows on this tour. Tomorrow I play in Basel, Switzerland at Carambolage. Some more good news to share: DRS-1, National Swiss Radio Station, is very much behind this record and they are playing the single all across the country!
More news to come as it unfolds here in sub-zero temperature Alpines! Come back and visit soon… John Francis
KXCI Tucson, Interview and Live Performance Tonight!
Greetings from the border.
Tune in tonight at 5:30 (Mountain Time) / 7:30 (EST) to KXCI in Tucson
to hear my live interview and performance. Stream it hear: www.KXCI.com
KXCI is one of my favorite radio stations, and they have been very good to me
playing my single and having me on the air. I’m happy to be returning tonight.
The interview precedes my concert tonight held at St.Andrew’s Episcopal Church
right around the corner from the radio station, in Tucson.
It is a beautiful sanctuary with Southwestern and Anglo-Catholic iconography,
and breathtaking acoustics. I’m unplugged tonight; not even using a microphone.
Showtime is at 7pm. www.standrewstucson.org
Hope to see you tonight! -
John Francis

So, 2011 was a BIG year. Let me catch you up for a second?
My current record “The Better Angels”, produced by John Carter Cash and recorded at the legendary Cash Cabin Studio in Hendersonville, TN, has really grown wings. Within a month of releasing it, “Angels” was in the top 10 MOST ADDED to Americana radio in the US. It climbed to #18 on the AMA Charts, and was also featured on OUTLAW COUNTRY (Sirius XM), The Village, The Loft, WSM – Official Station of the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, WXPN in Philadelphia, KXCI in Tucson, WUMB in Boston, NPR, CBS, RTE (Ireland), DRS-1 (Switzerland), and loads of other radio stations around the States and abroad.
Two songs received national lyricist awards from ASCAP (the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers): ‘Love Came to Me Dressed in Red’- Sammy Cahn Lyricist of the Year, and ‘Who?’ – the Jay Gorney Socially Conscious Lyricist of the Year’. A huge honor, on both counts.
Just as I did the last few years, I played 200+ shows in 2011. I got to literally share the stage with Tom Paxton and Dan Bern at the 50th Philadelphia Folk Festival, mind-blowing. Also played with Josh Ritter and Ani DiFranco at the Appel Farm Festival! Toured in the UK and Ireland, as well as all over the deep South (USA), North East, Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, and South West. Played in some of the most renown listening rooms and theaters out there, such as the Ark in Ann Arbor, Michigan…World Cafe Live in Philadelphia, Rockwood Music Hall in New York City…Thacker Mountain Stage in Oxford, Mississippi…Cyprus Avenue in Cork, Ireland…the Guthrie Center in Stockbridge, Massachusetts…the 12 Bar and the Bedford in London…Jammin’ Java in Vienna, Virginia…Music City Roots Live at the Loveless Barn in Nashville…and the list goes on…
You’ll never believe what also happened. I still find it hard to believe because of how surreal and beautiful it is. I played for the inaugural Johnny Cash Music Festival, in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Kris Kristofferson, Roseanne Cash, George Jones, John Carter Cash, Tommy Cash, Laura Cash, Joanne Cash, Rodney Crowell, Chelsea Crowell, Daily and Vincent, and about 8000 audience members celebrated the life and legacy of Johnny Cash. I got to sing “Folsum Prison Blues” with John Carter, and a song that he and I wrote together called, “No One Gets Out of Here Alive”. Rolling Stone said we “…brought the crowd to a roar”..! It was a highlight of the night. The festival was taped for a PBS television special to be aired soon. I’ll let ya know when! Best part: all proceeds are going to restore Johnny’s boyhood home in nearby Dyess. What a dream it was!
As I write this, I am in Phoenix, Arizona. I played in Tucson last night, and I’ll be in Phoenix for an outdoor concert event this Saturday. Then I’m off for a European tour, starting in Switzerland! One of my favorite places on earth – Zurich. If you are in Switzerland, Feb.9, come on out to the CD Release Concert at Stall 6. I’m playing with a new band backing me up, these guys are from Zurich, and they truly ROCK. Go to the SHOWS page to see upcoming and newly announced Switzerland and Germany tour dates!
Well that’s all for now folks! Thank you for visiting, and come on back soon…
Take it easy, but take it.
John Francis
